Tu Bishvat
by Ari Gordon

She baked a cake for the soul
Of the world and placed it
On the plain that flanked
Her shabby brown house.

She prayed like they taught her to:
Told him (or her, or it) that she
Baked a cake for the soul
Of the world and would he
(or she or you) like to try it?
A candle flickered atop the crust
Of crinoline cream, and in the warbling heat,
A gust of wind, a breath.
